St. Joseph’s student wins county spelling bee BY KATE WARD Northwest Arkansas Times Posted on Sunday, February 10, 2008 Email this story | Printer-friendly version After spelling 160 words correctly during a grueling two and a half hour match, Joseph's fifth-grader Jacob Elser finally brought an end to this year's Washington County Spelling Bee with the word "tatami." "I didn't know what it meant, but I knew it was Japanese," Elser said following Saturday's spell-off. "I've studied it before." Elser was among 40 of the top spellers from various schools across Washington County who competed in Saturday's spelling bee. "My mom and dad helped me a lot," he said. "We printed a list of words and studied it for about 30 minutes every day. Last night I studied for three hours." Elser's mother, Janell, refused to take credit for her son's achievement. "It was really all him - he studied a lot on his own," she said. "We couldn't be more proud. We're just thrilled for him." This year's spelling bee took place in the Walker Community Room of the Fayetteville Public Library. Students between first and eighth grades participated, representing each of the more than 30 schools in Washington County. "Some of the parents spend hours studying with their kids," said Suzi Robinson, a third-grade teacher at Washington Elementary. "It's amazing to see these younger students competing against seventhand eighth-graders. It all depends on how much they study." Prior to Saturday's spelling bee, students participated in a practice round by spelling words associated with Valentine's Day. "There are some words that people in Arkansas might pronounce differently," said Jane Webb, assistant superintendent for the Rogers Public School District. "I will be pronouncing them according to the dictionary. I'm not trying to trick you, but I do encourage you to understand the word before trying to spell it." Elser will go on to represent Washington County during the state spelling bee on March 8 in Little Rock. FEEDBACK: Something to say about this topic?
