Seminars 19th February: Gustavo Restivo Symptom and fantasy, two clinical dimensions The clinical division between symptom and fantasy is first introduced in Lacan last public seminar in Caracas, in July 198 Our psychoanalytic practice shows us that people ask for psychoanalysis concerned by their symptoms, the symptom is always present at the beginning of an analysis. On the other hand, one of Lacan's definitions of the end of analysis is the subject's passage through his original fantasy. Jacques-Alain Miller followed the issue up, stating that this division between symptom and fantasy is essential in the direction of the psychoanalytic treatment. Miller based these hypotheses on the reading of Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan and on his own psychoanalytic practice. The proposal for this meeting is to reflect about the differential status of symptoms and fantasies in psychoanalysis.
