NurseZone - On the job - Nursing news - Archive Campaign Aims to Shore up Nursing Faculty Printer friendly version Email this article What's this? By Kelly Phillips, feature writer With the nursing faculty shortage hurting efforts to improve the overall nursing shortage, a campaign was recently launched to steer nurses toward the classroom. Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow, a coalition of nursing and health care organizations trying to tame the nursing shortage, is focusing its latest effort on increasing the number of nurse educators. "We had a very successful early campaign to interest prospective students in nursing," said Kathleen Long, Ph. D., APRN, president of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). "Now we have plenty of interested students, but we are having to turn them away because we don’t have the resources to teach them, including adequate faculty." The faculty shortage is a real concern already, as nursing schools turned away more than 11,000 qualified applicants last year, according to an AACN study. Without action, it will only get worse with an aging faculty nearing retirement age, said Nancy Dickenson-Hazard of Sigma Theta Tau, one of the member organizations of Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow. She also cited the increasing rolls of nursing students. "All of this is intersecting starting now, and it’s only going to escalate over the next few years," said Nancy Dickenson-Hazard of Sigma Theta Tau, one of the member organizations of Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow. The campaign is aimed at getting nurses interested early in their careers in the faculty role, said Long, who also is dean of the University of Florida College of Nursing. The campaign aims to bust the myth that faculty members are removed from "the real life of nursing," she said. "It’s a strong effort to paint a more realistic and exciting picture of what it’s like to be a faculty member," Long said. "I think this campaign does a beautiful job of showing how a faculty role can combine work as an expert clinician, passing on that expertise to the next generation and actually improving nursing care through research." The campaign features four real-life nurse educators in print advertisements, a Web banner for use by nursing organizations and a flier. The slogan is "Nursing education... pass it on." Long cited an AACN survey that found a faculty vacancy rate across the country of about 9 percent.
